Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q - What's the difference between a 'bison' and a 'buffalo?'
A - Purists prefer the word 'bison' to distinguish our woolly friends from the true buffaloes (e.g., Cape Buffaloes and Water Buffaloes of Africa). Our animals' species name is Bison bison so that's why some folks prefer this name. But you'll hear many bison producers happily calling them buffalo, just like people in North America have done for 2+ centuries.

Q - Why should I eat buffalo meat? Is it just a fad?
A - Taste, value, nutrition, and many other reasons! (click here for details)

Q - Why should I raise buffalo? I'm curious about becoming a producer...
A - There are LOTS of great reasons! (click here to see a few of them...)

Q - How can I join Northwest Bison Association (NWBA)?
A - Click here to enroll! (Joining now will be a very smart business move!)

Q - What is the National Bison Association (NBA)?
A - Visit their web site and see (go to NBA) but come back here when done!

Mission Statement and Purpose

The Northwest Bison Association (NWBA) was officially formed in the spring of 1992 with the election of its first set of officers and board of directors. Its ultimate purpose is to promote the continued preservation, care and quality of the Great American Bison as a cherished American Heritage and to serve the needs of the bison producers and persons interested in bison throughout the western US and Pacific Northwest. The NWBA serves its members by providing a bimonthly newsletter and operates as an informational center working closely with other bison associations on the state, national and international levels to promote the bison industry. Two general NWBA meetings are held annually to provide for a cohesive membership. (Click here to enroll as a member!)

We have seen a tremendous growth in membership from the original nine members to our current active and associate members. The NWBA's first auction was held on December 3, 1994, with over 200 participating members and spectators in attendance bidding on over 100 animals. We are now offering a show in conjunction with the annual sale to assure even better quality breed stock.

The NWBA encourages all innovative ideas, suggestions and opinions which will provide for continued professionalism and better serve the needs of NWBA members and the bison industry. We also welcome and cordially invite all owners of bison and interested persons who share and promote the same values, goals and high standards of ethics to join our efforts in providing for the continued preservation and promotion of the Great American Bison.
